OU’s Spring Practice Is Moved Back Three Days To March 9th

OUBellSpring

OU has announced that spring practices will start 3 days later than previously announced to March 9th.  The Red and White Spring Game is unaffected by this change is still on for April 13th.

It was also announced the Bob Stoops will have his pre-spring practice news conference on March 7th.  We are getting close to the pigskin flying.  Boomer!

OU’s Football Program Is The Most Prestigious Program Over The Last 74 Seasons

The University of Oklahoma’s football team is and has been the the top team in prestige points since 1956.  The ESPN research department calculated the points to determine where teams would place in total prestige points for the last 73 seasons, since 1936 (Beginning of AP Poll).

It was unecessary to calculate prior to 1936,as there were so many anomolies and different championship claims by a myriad of organizations that it does not stand the lithmus test.

When you look at the makeup of the prestige points awarded to the Sooners you truly start to understand the amazing winning tradition of Oklahoma football. One amazing indicator is that the Sooners have had or shared their conference’s best record an eye-opening 40 times.

Did you truly know how prestigious Oklahoma’s program is before reading this post and the linked article?

Is OU The Number Six Ranked Coaching Job In College Football?

Is OU really the number six ranked coaching job in college football?  I for one am not buying that as OU was ranked the most prestigious program by ESPN recently.  The came to this decision based on reviewing numerous historical and current parameters given the program’s illustrious history and tradition.

I might buy number two or three, but number six….I am out.

What do you think?

Are Expectations Realistic For OU This Spring?

This spring will be important as the Sooners attempt fill some key position losses, due to graduation and turnover.  Add in the recent coaching changes and you have a recipe for undue expectations and extensive disagreements as the Sooner nation loves to speculate how strong the Sooners will be exiting the spring and heading into summer and the fall camp.  Trying to make heads and tails out of all the information coming out of spring practies often leads to some mis-characterizations or unrealistic expectations amongst the Sooner faithful.

I found this Dr. Saturday article insightful and useful in looking at the upcoming Sooner spring practices from a realistic or at least balanced viewpoint.  It exposes some holes and some strengths that will be important for the coaches to address and make important decisions heading into the fall.

Why Is OU’s Kendal Thompson The Mystery Quarterback Candidate?

Listening to Bob Stoops and the other coaches during the bowl practivce leading up to the Cotton Bowl, they praised Kendal’s ability and escapability, yet as we approach spring practices, he remains a serious underdog to win the quarterback battle.  It will be interesting to see how the coaches choose between the three strong candidates as this battle may well define how the Sooners do next fall.

While Thompson remains the underdog in this Spring’s battle for the starting quarterback position, he does have the tools to succeed. But he must bring all his skills and capabilities to bear to win out over experienced Blake Bell and popular trevor Knight this spring.

How do you think Kendal will do against the competition this spring?

Blake Bell ESPNAs the Spring practices and game approach, the Sooner Nation is getting excited after Stoops makes two strong new hires for the offensive and defensive lines, in combination with the first true quarterback battle since before Sam bradford started.  It is exactly the kind of change that many were hoping for and it is building expectations.  It is exciting times for the Sooner faithful and all eyes will be on who will rise to the top and take the starting roles during the Spring.

The final ingredient will be seeing the Summer recruits arrival and the additional competition that will ensue and how that will help shape a young Sooner squad heading into the Fall.

Check out Lame Johnson’s performance yesterday at the NFL Combine.  After his performance Lane proclaimed “I am the most sthletic offensive tackle in the draft.”

He was the top performing tackle in the  40-yard dash, broad jump, vertical jump and shuttles.  His performance has nothing but moved him further up in the first round.  Pre-combine his grade was already that of an immediate starter.  It is great to see a former Sooner do so well.  What do you think about Lane’s performance yesterday?
