Who Will Be The Next Star Running back For The Sooners?

As the #Sooners continue through the spring session, no position is being more closely watch than the running back position. For the first time in many years, OU ran the ball more than they passed it. They ran 559 times last year to only 383 passing attempts. This change in direction obviously paid off as the Sooners were a more physical team, who were able to cap off a great season with a huge win over a heavily favored Alabama team in the Sugar Bowl. So this begs the question, who is going to take the reins at running back now that Damien Williams, Roy Finch, Brennan Clay and Trey Milliard are gone. So the questions are:

Is Alex Ross The Future At Running back For The Sooners? He looked good in limited carries, but must be better at holding onto the ball.

Can California High School star Joe Mixon come in to fall practice and get into the starting mix? Joe Mixon is a truly talented player that reminds many of DeMarco Murray. He has soft hands, great size and a great burst. He has strong potential and will make fall camp very exciting.

What about big back recruit Samaje Perine? Samaje comes in as a big back with speed and great power, who could easily step up and be one of the physical backs the Sooners will highlight. he has solid potential!

What about Keith Ford and Daniel Brooks? Keith has power and Brooks has speed and both will figure into the starting rotation. This is important as injuries often play a part in the final rotation and who steps in to the starting role. The last couple of years in Norman have proven that.

Spring practice is a key time for the current running backs to make a impact, as fall camp will add to more highly recruited players into the fray as Coach Stoops and Coach Gundy choose their starting rotation. Injuries, holding onto the ball and on/off campus will likely figure into the mix as well, but the Sooners are
loaded and have many options before the first game’s kickoff.
